Third Avenue - 149th Street (2, 5)
Let’s stroll down Melrose Avenue, a hub for Mexican food.
Do you want some of the best horchata of your life? A classic Mexican comfort meal in The Bronx? Where the specials are written in Spanish, the patrons sport Mexican flags on their scarves and hats, the TVs are set to Liga MX, and you’ll be spoken to in Spanish unless proved a gringo first? Where you can top off a meal with a warm, proper cup of café de olla and an old-school piece of tres leches cake? Head over to Xochimilco Family Restaurant.
If you want tacos (the real kind), Tacos El Torito Versatile has you covered. It’s the kind of place where you’ll probably hear the Ranchera before you spot the establishment (advertised as “MEXICAN RESTAURANT” on its yellow front banner). As an ode to its authenticity, the google reviews are chaotic.
What did I miss? Let me know in the comments!
The waitress at Xochimilco spoke to us in Spanish until I started taking photos with my big camera like a white lady, at which point she switched over to English.
