This is where the Upper East Side starts its transition into East Harlem.

Can you spot the 96th street subway station entrance in this photo?

Compared to the rest of the Upper East Side, this area is quieter, more residential-focused, but still a mix of brownstones and high-rises. The subway station is right next to a giant school playground.

Classic brownstone vibe

South towards the heart of the Upper East Side, there seem to be a lot of specialty doctors, part of clinics that give off the vibe that they don’t take insurance. North, towards Harlem, seems to be a large medical facility that gives off the vibe of accessibility for the uninsured.

Whether you use this station to access Harlem or the Upper East Side, the area is in general a place to live or go to the doctor, but I don’t think anyone’s intentionally coming here to just hang out.

I’d recommend checking out 92NY’s website in advance to see if there’s an event that may interest you. And if you’re in the area, my one coffee/wine/small bites rec is La Bomboniera. It had cool vibes.
