Avenue U (F)
Korean, Mexican, Moldovian, Middle Eastern, Sicilian, Russian, Bulgarian, Italian, Ukranian, Chinese, Israeli, and Auto Industrial are just some of the cultures represented within mere feet of this station. Your challenge is to go to this stop and let Project 472 know what was missed in the list above.
Despite such diversity, there’s a singular socioeconomic vibe: middle-class immigrant. It’s an affordable area with nothing fancy; most establishments don’t have much of an online presence, and that’s why you have Project 472 to sus it out for you in person.
Eastern European
Try David’s Bakery for a fresh loaf of bread, deli cheeses, and best of all, a selection of snacks imported from Moldova, Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, and other Eastern European countries. You’ll probably need to ask whoever’s behind the counter for translation help, though, because most of the items are advertised in Slavic scripts.
David’s Bread. Nothing to look at out on the outside, but it’s an eclectic Eastern European gem on the inside.
Mexican
I really liked The Village Luncheonette as a simple, unpretentious diner with elevated classics like stawberry-cheesecake stuffed french toast and staple Mexican fare like burritos. I had an excellent and affordable brunch of cinnamon pancakes here.
Middle Eastern
There’s a Masjid below the station, but it doesn’t have any internet presence asides from a Google Maps location as far as I can tell.
Sicilian
If you want a legit Sicilian meal, you’re heading to Joe’s of Avenue U which also doubles as the Focacceria Palmeritana.
This is the takeout part of Joe’s on Avenue U, but there’s a large sit-down area adjacent to it if you’d like to dine in.
Jewish-Israeli
The Boutique Butcher is an Israeli fresh-meat shop and deli that also stocks imported Israeli snacks and dry goods. Many of the shoppers are Hasidic Jewish, but the store is open to anyone!
Korean
Within the residential section (which is anything excluding Avenue U or McDonald Street), there’s a beautiful Korean Church.
The First Korean Church of Brooklyn.
Italian
Try Nuccio’s Bakery!
Chinese
You can find Chinese cuisine in the area, like New Li Hing or Tasty House, sprinkled among everything else above.
Auto-Industrial, Construction, and Big Furniture Store Culture
Well, I didn’t know how else to put it. But basically if you need any car repair, access to construction items like steel or iron, or big and gaudy furniture pieces, you’ll get your needs met along McDonald Avenue, which runs beneath the elevated station tracks.
